Summary

As the global tourism environment embraces sustainable practice this course enables tourism businesses to examine the practical application of  sustainable management principles in a tourism context. It also develops an understanding of planning for tourism provision.  Through examination and discussion of case studies the course will support tourism practitioners in devleoping the skills and knowledge necessary to deal with rapidly changing tourist expectations of sustainability at local, national and international levels.

Who is this course for?

This course is for anybody working in a tourism related environment who is interested in developing their knowledge and understanding of sustainable development and how best to implement sustainable practices into their organisation.

There are no specific requirements for this qualification but this is a degree level short course and will be assessed accordingly therefore a good standard of literacy is essential.

The course consists of a combination of formal lectures. discussions and visits to "best practice" organisations, topics for discussion include

• sustainability issues involved or associated with local, regional, national and international tourism planning and development
• the need for strategic planning for sustainable growth and the main costs and benefits resulting from such growth
• sustainability issues in global tourism and current trends in practice
• an appraisal of the different approaches to site planning and visitor management
